Where & Why it is Used?
In Pharmaceutical Application, Centrifuge is used for processing various types of Solvents with High Rotating Speeds for the Separation process. Due to high speed, bearing housing may develop spark, hence to avoid any kind of fire/explosion it is essential to purge the centrifuge with Nitrogen before start-up.
Similarly when the centrifuge is in operation continuous nitrogen blanketing is recommended for centrifuge basket as well as the bearing housing. The centrifuge inertizing skid is designed with incorporating proper interlocks to ensure the safety of the Operator & maintain the Quality of the product being processed.
Also, many centrifuging operations are hazardous because they feed slurries and wash liquors which contain flammable liquids. In addition, ignition sources are frequently present. To avoid fires and explosions in centrifuges, inert gas (Nitrogen) purging is commonly applied before an operation begins, and inert gas blanketing is done during the operation, to lower the oxygen concentration below the limiting oxygen concentration of the flammable liquid.
This communication discusses and describes three commonly used inerting systems Monitoring by flow, Monitoring by pressure, and Monitoring by oxygen analysis.
